Curated by painter and folklorist Ben Edge, Common Ground offers a thought-provoking exploration of the stories tied to local common land and the natural environment in Cheltenham and the Cotswolds. The exhibition will delve into themes of change, loss, rebellion, and reclamation, reflecting on how these shared spaces have evolved over time.

Once, nearly half of the land in Britain was considered Common Land, but today it represents just 3% of England’s total area. Common Ground will examine the historical, industrial, and cultural forces that have shaped our relationship with these spaces, addressing contemporary issues such as climate change, sustainability, migration, and placemaking.

The exhibition will feature a diverse range of works, including objects from The Wilson’s collections, contemporary art pieces, and large-scale installations. Key highlights include:

-New site-specific commission by Adelaide Damoah, reflecting on Cheltenham’s historical ties to slavery and abolition.

– A film by Boss Morris, an all-female Morris dancing group from Stroud, Gloucestershire, offering a unique take on local traditions.

– Engaging public programme, including talks, tours, a ‘Field to Fork’ event, and workshops that explore the themes presented throughout the exhibition.

Common Ground runs from 21 February 2025 – 31 August 2025 and is open with free entry.
