A NEW cohort of artists-in-residence have been revealed for next year’s We Are Creators programme at The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum in Cheltenham.
Now in its third year, this pioneering initiative has become an important platform for nurturing emerging talent in Gloucestershire as well as fostering community engagement and enriching the county’s cultural scene.
In January, eight new artists will begin their 12-month residency, working across a range of diverse disciplines, including sculpture, print, collage, ceramics, textiles and mixed media.
The Wilson will provide them with dedicated studio and exhibition space, as well as a supportive environment to hone their craft and establish their careers in the visual arts sector. They will be able to showcase their work in the Sir Charles Irving Community Art Gallery, hosting interactive exhibitions and events.
In return, the artists will run public workshops, introducing visitors to a variety of artistic practices over 12 dedicated days.
The eight artists were selected by The Wilson’s Creative Community Panel, which reflects the diversity of Gloucestershire’s artistic voices and perspectives. They are:
- Sammi Fletcher – A multidisciplinary artist exploring a range of creative media.
- Loz Apperly – A writer, musician, and short filmmaker.
- Emily Oswald – A sculptor and printmaker.
- Grace Gatley – A mixed media embroidery artist.
- Jussara Nazare – A multidisciplinary talent focusing on jewellery, fashion, painting, and print.
- Harriet Hughes – A mixed media artist combining prints, collages, ceramics, and textiles.
- Helena Doyle – A multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and educator.
- Adam Rush – A sculptor and ceramicist.
Lisa Edgar, director at The Wilson, said: “We are delighted to welcome our new cohort of resident artists to The Wilson. This community serves as an invaluable creative resource for both the museum and Cheltenham, as the artists share their practices with the wider community through the We Are Creators programme. In return, they benefit from free studio space and professional development opportunities.
“This incubator programme for early-career artists, designers, and makers fosters a thriving local creative economy, contributing to the growth of culture in the region.”
Since its inception in 2022, We Are Creators has provided a launchpad for emerging talent while strengthening Cheltenham’s reputation as a centre for artistic innovation, as well as shining a light on collaboration and community.
